About Us

Established in 2004 and based out of Greenville, SC, k9.5 is a foster home based rescue and sanctuary dedicated to helping Great Pyrenees, other giant breeds, senior and special needs canines. With a focus on helping those most often overlooked in shelters due to size, age or need, we provide the animals with medical, physical, behavioral, and emotional support. From extreme fears to grey muzzles, and wheelchairs to 100lbs plus, k9.5 Rescue is committed to proving that all dogs deserve a chance.

What’s the .5?

Simply put, “.5” means “more.”

Large (60lbs+) and extra large dogs (100lbs+) aren’t what most consider to be a “normal sized” k9 as they tower over other animals, exhibit more power, and take up more space. As a result, they’re unfortunately most often feared, judged or overlooked.

Seniors’ advanced age often lead them to shelters as they slow down and require more care. Sadly, few want to take home “an old dog.”

Special needs animals necessitate more physical or emotional attention, so they’re left behind and ignored at shelters because they’re “too much work.”

All too often, too big, too old, and needing too much assistance is labeled a curse.

We disagree. We feel that their “more” means more joy, more love and more life.

Foolishly, these fabulous animals who can live good lives are so often tossed aside, overlooked or forgotten. When they’re given the opportunity, however, we watch them flourish and lead long, healthy, vivacious and genuinely happy lives.

After defying the odds, they are more than your typical k9. They are a k9.5.
